Global Warming

Al Gore’s award winning 2006 documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, paints a gloomy picture of the environment. The documentary talks about global warming, an issue that has stirred many debates in various sectors of the country, and the hazards it presents to humans and the world in general.

Global warming is described as the continuous rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere, air, and oceans. A rise in the Earth’s temperature can cause snowcaps and glaciers to melt, oceans to warm up, and coastal areas to flood up. Rapid warming can greatly affect and threaten the Earth’s existence.

The main cause of global warming is the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other harmful substances into the Earth’s atmosphere. These harmful gases are released when natural gas and fossil fuels are burned. Other factors that contribute to global warming include greenhouse gases like water vapor and Nitrous Oxide (NO2). Human beings contribute to this problem via carbon emissions and deforestation.

While debates about global warming continue to heat up, numerous natural and environmental disasters continue to take place as an effect. Hurricane Katrina; the earthquake that devastated China in April this year; various occurrences of typhoons; tornados; wildfires; all these disasters destroyed lives and livelihood.

Perhaps the issue here is not whether one should believe the existence of global warming or not. More attention should be given to the value of life by thinking of ways to fight the wrath of nature. How can we put a stop to the gradual increase of the Earth’s temperature? How can we lessen our carbon footprint? How can we contribute to the fight against pollution? These are the questions we should all find the answers for.

Note: Cement companies are some of the worst offenders. To see what cement companies (Lafarge, Holcim, Cemex, etc) are doing for the environment and air quality, view industrial-air-quality.com..

Garage Door Openers - Necessity in the Home

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Most of us cannot remember the days when you had to open your garage door by hand. I barely do but that does not mean that I appreciate the automatic ones any less. I have lived in a place that had a manual garage door and let me tell you that it is a nightmare. It is bad enough just having to do it when the weather is nice but imagine doing it in the freezing cold winter of the rain for that matter. In my opinion having an automatic door is a necessity.

Before shopping for an automatic garage door consider what you need. The last thing you want to happen is for you to go through the hassle of searching for and buying an opener only to install it and find it does not work properly. This can happen. The openers have different strength motors that are made for certain sizes and weights of doors. Before plunking down cash for yours make sure that you know what type of door you have and what the requirements it has for a lifting motor. After knowing your door make sure that you know what the opener is rated for. This is often overlooked but it is easy since the box or the manual will tell you exactly what type of door it is meant for. The right tool for the job is the best one.

The easiest way to make sure that you get only what you need and have no back breaking work is to hire a company to do the work. This does not mean that you have no hand in the matter since the company may not be the best in the business. The less you want to be involved the better you must research the company you want to hire. Regardless of the people you hire to do the job, you should do the research on openers too. When they present you with the product they recommend you should be knowledgeable enough to know if they are right or if they quote you a fair cost.

Garage door openers are a serious thing and as with all serious things learning is your best bet. Know what you have and know what you need whether you will be buying it and putting it in or not.

How to Manage When Everybody is Your Client

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Politics. We all talk about it, we all have an opinion, we know what is best and we know who to blame. The best horseman is always on his feet.

In business they have invented the term “Client relationship management”. How would a government official or administrator see that? How would you manage when everybody is your client?

“You are all different,” shouts (The Life of) Brian. “Yes, we are all different,” returns the crowd in choir. “I’m not,” says one of them in the multitude.

In Spain there are autonomous communities of which a few — one, most of all — are competing to get “more” independence.
But then, in that “Nation” as they want to call themselves, they have their own problems. A lot fewer clients yet still difficult to manage.

Managing politics — public governance — is so hard just because you are managing non-functional requirements. And what the hell is that?

In business you have two kind of requirements to build your company; functional requirements which is something as a solution for a specific group (treasury, sales, marketing, ICT, Human resources).
You also have non-functional requirements. Infrastructure is the most common amongst them. You are talking about things like -security (most of all), integrity, accessibility, safety, health, etc.

This is the most difficult part in managing business. And this is because we all — not only a specific group — depend on them.

Public governance is all about infrastructure and non-functional requirements. Normally you are not aware of this but when petrol get very expensive (infrastructure) you remember, also when your country is attacked by others. You do not longer feel secure!

Picture yourself as one of them, trying to manage all that (and I do not mean the few at the top). They have got a hard job.

Fighting Asthma - Part 2

Friday, July 25th, 2008

One week my wife had severe asthma and it would not go away. In fact, we had visited our doctor numerous times for adrenalin shots. These helped in the short term (for a day or so) but the asthma just returned again later. Both of us wanted to resolve this condition on a more permanent basis, as it was becoming very difficult to deal with.

We talked to our doctor, a wonderful man named Dr. Frischer, and he directed us to a specialist. Someone who was familiar with the disease and could help us come up with a permanent handling.

I must admit that my wife did not want to go to this specialist. She didn’t say why, she just was not comfortable with him. However, I convinced her, and before long we had pulled up to the doctors office, which was in a little hospital in Paramount, California.

The specialist took one look at Claudia and knew that her asthma was terrible. He had Claudia breath into a tube, then tisked to himself when he saw the result. It appeared that Claudia was not getting anywhere near the amount of oxygen that a normal person received. In fact, her lungs were drawing in about a forth of the normal amount of air - it was pretty bad that day. Which meant, of course, it was the perfect day to see the specialist.

The guy did some more tests, then recommended an allergy panel to determine exactly which substance was causing Claudia’s condition. He explained that asthma is usually triggered by something, some particle in the air. It could be dust, pollen, cockroach droppings, cat dandruff or any other small particle.

We agreed and the panel was done. The doctor swabbed her arm with about twenty different substances, explaining that they would swell up into little bumps if anything registered. One substance registered strongly - simple dust. It seemed that Claudia’s asthma was caused by dust.

While we were there, the specialist increased her Prednisone dosage to 60 milligrams. This is an incredibly high dosage of this drug, but based upon Claudia’s poor breathing, the doctor felt it was necessary. If you remember from the previous article (part 1), prednisone has the side effect of making Claudia extremely hostile to our poor cat Baby. Well, during the next few weeks that cat had to be guarded night and day by Al and myself to keep Claudia from killing it.

The result of this trip? We finally realized the link between the environment and Claudia’s asthma. We decided to be a little more proactive, and purchased some air filters for the living room and bedroom. These helped control the asthma to a certain extent. The other result? Now Claudia was feeling the other major short term side effect of Prednisone - it’s very difficult to stop taking..

Massage Oil For Massage Therapy

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Massage oil is a great addition to any massage experience. It enhances not only the relaxing nature of the massage therapy session, but also adds to the healing benefits of the massage.

The use of massage oil is not a new idea. Homer, Plato, Socrates - all of these men referenced the use of massage oil as an aid for pain relief in their writings. Today, pain relief is one reason for using massage oil. Others include the facilitation of more gliding massage, skin nourishment, and the promotion of good health in general.

How do you choose a massage oil for massage therapy? First, choose an oil that is cold-pressed or expeller-pressed. Both of these have had the least amount of processing and will last longest. Prevent them from spoiling by keeping them in a cool place and adding 300 IUs of vitamin E per pint of oil monthly. In addition, essential oils, or oils that are distilled from various plants, roots, or seeds) can be added. Seek the aid of a professional to advise on a good combination.

Some oils to choose from for massage therapy include:

* Sweet almond oil - Anti-inflammatory, light, and good for most skin types, especially dry skin.

* Apricot kernel oil - Reduces stress, provides balance, and good for all skin types, especially prematurely aging skin.

* Avocado oil - This is a heavy oil best diluted at a rate of 10% in a lighter oil.

* Borage oil - Good for eczema and psoriasis, it penetrates, regenerates, and stimulates.

* Castor oil - A thick sticky oil good for drawing out toxins and for use on scar tissue. Best used in a poultice.

* Coconut oil - A thick, heavy oil that should be warmed before use. Good for cracked skin.

* Emu oil - Anti-inflammatory and used for arthritis, sore muscles, bruising, and eczema. May block pores.

* Grapeseed oil - Non-allergenic and good for all types of skin.

* Jojoba oil - A penetrating, anti-bacterial oil for eczema and acne.

* Kukui nut oil - Anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory that is light and has a slight warming effect.

* Olive oil - Has a warming effect and relieves stiffness.

Different skin types will fare better with different types of oil. As such, it will be a good idea to experiment with different kinds for massage therapy. If one doesn’t work, try another. Also, some may personally prefer the smell or the effects of one massage oil to another. The selection of massage oils is pretty wide; so there is bound to be a preferred one for just about anybody.

Don’t get ripped off for central heating insurance

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Central heating insurance seems mistakable for with gas boiler service contracts at first, though some providers may include failure insurance along with monthly service charges, or vice versa. Anyway you should probably view your central heating breakdown cover as a distinct item, and ask some must-know points in relation to the service you’re getting.

Bear in mind a central heating breakdown could end up being trouble to an unqualified disaster, so ensure you’ll be given top quality help, be it as an added extra of a gas boiler service package or as stand-alone central heating breakdown cover.

The essential issue is to double check your chosen offer provides twenty four hour service and that plumbers are CORGI registered. Once that’s assured you can take the offer that seems strongest to your eyes.

You’ll come across numerous seemingly odd additions from the assorted central heating insurance cover firms, especially if an offering you’re assessing is bundled with a service contract. Make sure to keep an eye out for this as the complete minimum needed, and you and your family will be insured against the great number of problems families signing up for central heating breakdown cover may come across.

One last point to look at: be perfectly certain your selected company doesn’t place restrictions on the number of engineer visits you will be able to have over the course of your arrangement. Some companies may sink a limitation in the fine details of their contract and the last thing you want during an emergency is to be informed you’ve run through the upper limit number of visits!

Top Ten Ways to Jump Start Your Weight Loss Program

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

1. Eat protein at every meal, including breakfast.

2. Eliminate wheat- and flour-based products for the time being. And yes, that definitely includes bread and pasta.

3. Eat unprocessed foods. Ninety percent of what you eat should be a combination of (in this order of importance) raw vegetables, steamed vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and maybe a few fruits if necessary.

4. Reduce starch to one portion a day, and don’t eat that portion during your evening meal. Best choices are beans, sweet potatoes, and oatmeal.

5. Don’t overdo fruit: one a day maximum, and only the low-sugar, high-fiber variety. Apples, pears, plums and berries all are good choices. For now, fruit should be eaten alone or with something light, like low fat nuts. Lose the fruit juice completely.

6. Reduce or eliminate dairy for the time being, especially cow’s milk. Exceptions: reasonable amounts of low sugar, fat free yogurt.

7. Lose the booze. Despite what the “studies” say, you lose no health benefits by giving up alcohol (including wine). There is nothing essential in alcohol that you can’t get in fruits and vegetables without all the bad side effects that go along with it.

8. Stop using vegetable oils such as sunflower, safflower and corn. The supermarket kind is highly refined, and it oxidizes easily when heated, contributing to arterial plaque. Use olive oil instead, and apply it to food after the food is cooked when possible.

9. Watch which types of fat you’re eating. The amount of fat you eat is probably less important than the kind of fat you eat. The worst are fried foods, margarine and foods that contain hydrogenized or partially hydrogenized oils. The best is omega-3, found in fish and flaxseed oil.

10. Obsessively drink water: At least 8 ounces for every 20 pounds of bodyweight you’re now carrying around, each day. Every day. No excuses.

Minimize Your Office And Equipment Start-Up Costs

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

When you set up your office area you have to consider clients, suppliers, family, neighbors and yourself. The balance is easy to achieve when you keep in mind the double function your home has from now on: a home and an office. Below I outline the baby-steps that will help you to achieve this balance. Define your work area

This is the first step on your path to success. If you don’t have a defined work area, a place that says to you “While You Are Here, You Are At Work!”, then you will probably stumble in a lot of distractions and by the end of the day you will be surprised with how little you have done. You should not limit your idea of work area to space only. Consider time dimensions, too. Your coach could be your office, if your family knows that you are working and not sleeping, petting the cat or watching TV.

You should always keep in mind your cost. If defining your area means drywall, purchasing that awesome coach and a new carpet, then you’d better reconsider. Your business will be pretty slow for the first few months, so you’d better save that money for promotion and to secure your basic expenses.

Equip it

Equipment is always a two-sided issueyou have to keep your costs at a minimum and at the same time you have to be professional and not to look “cheap”.

The first place to start cutting your costs is furniture. Think classic, think second-hand, and think professional use! Don’t fall for that brand-new filling cabinet for “home use”it is likely to become outdated very soon and fall apart just when you need it. You will be better off with a comfortable second-hand chair, table and filling cabinet that were actually used and proved to be sturdy enough.

Now, let’s look at the “tools”. In most of the cases they constitute of your computer, keyboard, mouse, printer and your website. It is my personal observation that the most sensitive pieces of equipment are the mouse and the keyboard, so I would recommend that you consider the best quality for these two. Your monitor is also very important, but I’ve found that you don’t need Sony in order to feel comfortable and keep your eyes healthy. A good alternative is CTX.

Finally, let’s look at your website. Your website is your store- front and here, you’ll have to go an extra mile in order to create a good first impression. If you can afford it, I would recommend that you hire a professional web designer. However, if money is tight, there are various alternatives that will help you to create a professional image. One of my favorites is BigStep ( http://www.bigstep.com ) that will help you to create your site in several easy steps. Another good source is Working Solo ( http://www.workingsolo.com ) and the SCORE program ( http://www.score.org ) that offers free consulting for over 500 categories. Once you have your website ready to be published, you should think about finding a host for it and securing your own domain name. InterNIC lists the major ISP providers here (http://www.internic.net/alpha.html ). There are some very good solutions: http://service.bfast.com/bfast/click? bfmid=12768212&siteid=37618938&bfpage=home offers 200 MB of web space for $200 upfront without Any Monthly Fees. This is a good deal, especially if you plan to keep in business for at least a year. Here: http://www.namezero.com you can secure your business name for free (the free service comes with a navigation bar) or upgrade to the deluxe version.

Think about safety

This section includes anything that may jeopardize your business from word of mouth that a customer tripped in a toy and broke her neck to a costly lawsuit for damages. Don’t dismiss any of these possibilities and research carefully how to insure and protect your business.

Finally, I wish you success with your newborn business!
