Know The Color Basics

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Do your print ads or web pages seem so flat that no one ever bothers looking at it? How would you like to make them more unique and attractive?

The key to a striking visual ad is the color. It gives life to any image. Take for example the cartoons that we watch on television and how they attract kids. We may also wonder why fast food and restaurants use the same color for their business or why banana catsup is colored red and not yellow.

Every color has its own characteristics. They represent different mood, personality or impression. In other words, colors influence people.

In deciding what color to use, you must first know the nature of your business. You cannot use just one color, or else your ad will look so plain and boring. However, using different colors can mess up your image or it may create a different impression to the viewers. Balance is important.

There are three basic color models used in graphics design, CMYK, RGB and Pantone.

In making printed images, it is best to use the CMYK color model. CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and black. It is referred to as the four-color process. This color model is commonly used in the printing process to produce full-color photographs and images. The advantage of using this model is that it reduces the cost of printing. When CMYK are combined, they produce the greatest number of printable colors. It is not advisable for use in single-color printing, though. Also, this model does not produce spot inks, such as metallic silver or gold.

Use the RGB (red, green and blue) color model in creating your web page images. All display devices, such as computer monitor or television, use this type of color mode. There are no cost limitations in the use of color for unprinted ad such as the web page. So you can use as much color as you want without fear of spending a lot of money on colors. In addition, current computer programs now offer a wide variety of colors.

Pantone colors are best suited for logos and corporate identity because it creates exact color match. This color model specifies consistency. If you want your printed company brochure to look exactly the same as how it appears on the computer, use pantone colors. The only drawback is that you will have to look for the right printer and paper. Glossy or coated paper tends to slightly alter the color. The difference between printed images on a glossy paper and a plain paper is very visible.

There’s a rule in color psychology that we must apply in designing print ads or web page. Use colors that will best describe the nature of your business. More importantly, your ad image must speak exactly what you want to tell the viewers.

You may wonder why I write articles. Besides from the fact that it’s my job, I used to write short stories when I was younger. I think it would be helpful if I said I’m a big fan of Zach de la Rocha and Rage Against the Machine. This would explain my own views about a lot of things. Their songs were about national issues, politics and human rights. They support the American Indian Movement and Che Guevara, the face you see on t-shirts. Not that it concerns me. I only like their music and idealism.
I’m not an artist, I’m not a poet. I just love writing anything I want. I wasn’t born a genius, I just want to know and understand something I don’t. I like to find the difference between similar things. It’s like counting birthmarks on each identical twin.

Move On!

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

I woke up one morning with a sharp pain in my ear. The last time I had an earache was some eighteen years ago. Then it was my mother’s lot to worry about it. But this morning, I am to worry because I’m grown and hardly could hear with the left ears. I felt as if some insects crept into the ear while I slept. A friend once told me roaches and spiders could be that crazy. Whatever caused the pain all I wanted to do was see a doctor. I learnt that Ear specialists are at the General Hospitals, so I decided to visit the General Hospital on Broad Street.

I arrived early at this hospital but couldn’t see a doctor until after four hours of going through some tiresome routine. Finally, I got an appointment with a specialist and left.

Back on Broad Street, sea fresh air embraced me, washing away the foul smell of the hospital from around me. The breeze was so welcoming that I decided to take a short walk down the street.

It’s been almost a decade I last stepped foot on Broad Street. The last time was my graduation from high school. My absence from here was not because my experiences in high school were some kind of bored moments. No, I had the best days of my present life in my high school.

I attended Methodist Boys’ High School popularly known as the gentlemen of Broad Street. They call the boys gentlemen because the school was situated on that street that is not too different from Wall Street, a business district. I had wonderful moments, which some people will hesitate to throw into a waste Bin. I threw it away anyway.

But this morning, out there on that same street that I walked for six years, I revisited my past. I floated on the street like I’m dressed in white shirt, white jacket, the school multi colored tie and a pair well pressed trousers sitting on brown shoes. I chose to wear my uniform that makes me one of the gentlemen of Broad Street again.

Though I knew the school had moved to Victoria Island (another part of the city) but the old fence and gate remain on the former site. I walked to the gate, greeted the security men and asked if I can take a look in. They did let me.

I passed through the gate and all that faced me was dilapidation. Stones covered with giant grasses and shrubs, which painted a picture of a wasteland. I could not make out where my favorite classroom used to be or the chemistry laboratory where I do choose to read instead of the library. I could not make out a thing that could link me with the past years spent. I shook my head pitying this desolation that once gave me my wonder years.

But afar off, I saw something that sparked up hope in me. It was the school hall. It did survive the massive destruction caused by some petroleum company who bought this estate. I stared at it for a long time thinking it a mirage. No, it was not. It was there still standing. Standing tall.

I went close, stepped into the cobweb-clothed hall. Thick dust, thick enough to spark an asthmatic crisis rose from the ground as I walk on it like it was some continental rug. Everything is in perfect shape. (The carved wooden school crest sitting at the upper part of the front wall, the polished platform, which has aged with dust from being abandoned. Every thing seemed perfect but with age.

In the abandoned hall, right in its center, I closed my eyes and it all came back. I smelled it like it was yesterday. It was fresh as the dew on grass before the morning sun. The memories flooded back as I heard the students chorused the hymns in unison from the songs of praise pocket book, I could hear the school chaplain: preaching a motivational sermon to the boys. I heard the school song as it rose like the crashing of the waves against a ship. I opened my eyes; felt some drops sank into my cotton blue shirt, chilling my body. I dried my tears and walked out.

I had to leave the past behind me. I wasn’t going to stand there like that war veteran polishing a medal of honor he received some forty years ago. I would never stand one more minute there like that man who thinks, if he were not bankrupt fifteen years ago, he would be rich now. I wasn’t going to let tears down my cheeks like that lady who lost her job as a secretary because she wasn’t computer literate and all she could do was complain, “I could type six million words in one minute.” I have to let go of the past and move on.

I’m not just talking about me, that war veteran or that secretary (that lady rather, she lost her job.) I’m talking to you who sit there in self-pity because you just lost your coolest job. Don’t sit there bemoaning your fate, explaining to your friends what went wrong. You don’t have to tell your sisters or brothers how bad it is and expect someone to come to hug you and say, “sorry, everything will be alright.” Come on wake up. Whatever happened seconds ago is already history. The last minute before you start reading this is history.

Pick up yourself, dry your tears like I did, raise your head and shoulders and do what? MOVE ON!

There is more in the future. Plunge into it. And you will realise that all past glory and failures are nothing but a page in your history.

    Weatherproofing Your Deck

    Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Your deck is a favorite gathering place in summer and lets the whole family enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. In order to keep your deck functional and looking great for years, you do need to make sure the deck is properly weatherproofed. Taking the steps to weatherproof your deck now will insure your investment for many, many years.

Weatherproofing a deck isn’t difficult; it requires a minimum of materials and a bit of elbow grease. You should seal your deck to weatherproof it when it is first built and periodically (every few years or so) reapply the sealant to make sure the wood continues to hold up.

Materials that will you will need include a hose, dust mask, pail of water, safety glasses, deck cleaner, waterproofing staining sealer, broom, belt sander or sandpaper, and paintbrush. Try renting a paint sprayer if you can as applying the sealer with a sprayer instead of a brush can really save you some time.

It’s important to gather your materials together beforehand so that you have them ready the day you plan to weatherproof the deck, but what’s even more important is the weather. You must be certain that there is no rain in the forecast for that day and the next before you call over all your friends to help with your weatherproofing project!

After you have verified that there is no threat of rain and you have all your materials on hand, you should start by giving the deck a thorough cleaning. Make sure you get all the cracks and corners. If you find any rough spots sand them down. Carefully remove left over sawdust and debris with the broom. Always use a dust mask as well as safety glasses while sanding.

After the deck has been cleaned and has dried fully, you are ready to start sealing. Be sure to
follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the weatherproofing seal. If you are going to use paint after you seal the deck, make sure that what you use for sealant will work with a paint overcoat.

Whether you are using a paint brush or sprayer, you must make sure to cover the entire deck - every crack and crevice, leaving no spot unsealed. This means paying close attention to things like railings, beams and wall supports if they’re present.

Once you are done sealing, you will have to resist the urge to get on the deck and enjoy it right away. You need to let it dry thoroughly according to the manufacturers instructions on the sealant. This might be difficult, but, making sure you can enjoy your beautiful deck for years to come is well worth the wait.

    What are Renewable Portfolio Standards?

    Friday, August 15th, 2008

Renewable Portfolio Standards or RPS are standards, which have been adopted by states to voluntarily open up Green Energy Markets. So far almost all the Northeast or 11 states have already adopted the standards, but they are not alone as there are now 23 states in all which have adopted these standards and that means that the Renewable Portfolio Standards have been adopted in nearly have of the states in the United States of America and the momentum is clearly growing. These standards specify things such as technology mix of utilities and energy sources by state mandates.

Once such standards are mandated it becomes up to the utility itself to chose how to fulfill this mandate and which combinations of renewable energy sources it will use. Some free market thinkers say this is bad news because in the end such mandates cost the consumers, small businesses and industry and can take away quality of life to families due to higher energy costs, hurt small business and take away a competitive advantage to manufacturing in one state and give it to another or even another country.

Proponents love it because it means more Research and Development monies for new technologies, more revenues for existing generation facilities which do not participate and it is a home grown “Kyoto Type Treaty” which does not have the severe and dire impact on our economy. What do you think about the RPS and Green Energy ideas? Consider this in 2006.

Buffalo Meat - A Cut Above The Rest

    Sunday, August 10th, 2008

For many people, nothing could be more stressful than being a meat lover and
be prescribed a low-calorie diet. Meat and low calories are
self-contradictory, that’s the common perception. Persons who are trying
to find a low-calorie meat that could replace the kind they are used to eating
would do well to consider buffalo meat.

There are many Western-themed restaurants that offer buffalo (also known as
American bison) dishes. Ted’s Montana Grill, co-founded by media mogul Ted
Turner, which specializes in hand-cut beef and bison steaks, has locations in
sixteen states. The Buffalo Bistro and Buffalo Grill in Utah’s Zion
National Park are popular tourist attractions. Customers at such
restaurants can anticipate being presented with specialties like roasted buffalo
or grilled buffalo with a small serving of mashed potato, buffalo burger type
served like Salisbury steak with French fries on the sides, regular buffalo
steak with a generous serving of raw onion toppings, and even stewed buffalo
served with a large mixture of green vegetables in it.

Roasted buffalo meat is especially popular, especially in its almost-raw
form. Unlike meat from other animals, bison meat requires very little
seasoning to bring out its naturally juicy and finger-licking flavor. A
simple preparation technique would be to score the meat only on the surface and
dab it with a little salt, a little pepper and olive oil, and it’s ready for
cooking. One of the advantages that buffalo meat holds over regular beef
is that it takes a shorter time to cook. Just sear both sides to lock in
    the flavor and you’re done!

Buffalo meat is the only meat with the
3 Ts - Texture, Tenderness and Taste. The flavor is sweeter, and it is
lighter and less greasy than other kinds of meat I was used to, such as cow beef
or pork or chicken. Also, buffalo meat does not need any tangy gravy to
bring out its naturally good flavor; that is important because gravy for meat is
    usually heavy on calories.

There are some interesting healthful statistics about how, in many ways,
buffalo meat is more nutritious than other kinds of animals’ meat. It has
around 70%-90% less fat than beef, and around 50% less cholesterol. Since it
doesn’t have all those harmful fats, it has more protein, iron, amino acids and
omega nutrients that a number of people are prescribed to take in the form of
tasteless fish and raw vegetables. It is also eminently suitable for
persons on a low-carbohydrate diet. A four-ounce serving contains no
carbs, 11 grams of protein and three percent of total fat.

And the fat it contains is of the good kind, a monounsaturated fat known as
omega-3 fatty acids. Adequate intake of this kind of fat has been
scientifically proven to prevent heart disease and promote overall
cardiovascular health. In fact, buffalo meat has been endorsed by the
American Heart Association and prescribed by physicians for patients on a
    low-fat, low-calorie diet.

Buffaloes are grown in their natural elements in the open fields and are not
given any chemical feeds or antibiotics or artificial growth hormones which are
suspected of causing cancer. Since buffaloes are fed only natural grains
and green grass, they have a natural strong resistance to diseases and their
meat is not tainted with any harmful chemicals. In many ways, the meat of the
buffalo, which feeds on nature’s grain and grass, has been graded to be far more
excellent than cow, dog or chicken meat.

Today, we can enjoy buffalo steaks, soups, stews, and burgers either in
restaurants or at home. Buffalo meat is conveniently available in most
supermarkets and is offered by many websites. It’s a hearty, healthy,
delicious, and convenient way to enjoy meat.
